The human face is the face of the soul, the passage from the outside world to the inside realm of silence both expressed and not, what normally remains secretive.
A Face or a Mask? Physiognomy perhaps? Mature or youthful, agonizing or calm, rough or bright reflecting the inner light, sweet or bitter, a mirror or mirrored? Seeking the outside or the inside?
The face is the gate of the senses, it is the gate of life, of breath, of nourishment and of communication, it coexists with the mind.
The face, and all the rest surrounded by silence. This kind of silence that words can’t describe, that no one has ever spoken of, and that exists before consciousness.
The face is an ovum in gestation of the being. A silence that speaks to us, a silence that leads us to the sacred grounds where birth, death, love and pain are condensed and revealed.
Time is timeless as it unfolds right in front of our eyes; A moment that embraces eternity is the message. The space illuminates the face, in the space it exists, the space shapes it, deforms it.
The face while staring at us turns its gaze inwards right into the center of the self. The gaze rays spread all over. The eyes open or closed; they can nevertheless see. The gaze is a reflection of the whole world, the eye is a sun as Plato calls it «ηλιοδέστατον», the eye receives the light and activates the revelation of the phenomena.
Every face known or unknown becomes a story of «Γνώθι σ'Αυτόν», «know thyself». The portrait integrates the space dimension with time through the recording and writing of light.
Is it the gaze of the photographer or of the face depicted? Surely we are searching for an identity, that of the photographer or of the photographed face, via a transcendental dimension where they confront each other and acrobating, to portray the image of the eternal. Face to face… (text and photos by Tasos Biris)
